  VIRGOLETTA

Inside Virgoletta Inside Virgoletta
Virgoletta is found on the Vignale hill. The suburb was dominion of the Corbellari family, from which the original name "Verrucola Corbellariorum". In the XI-XII century passed to the Malaspinas of the "Spino Secco". The first mention of Virgoletta dates back to this period, in the action of division among the Malaspina of the Spino Secco in 1275. In this period, tall boundaries were raised and the suburb started to grow. In 1449 Virgoletta passed to Galeotto Campofregoso, that owed the suburb until 1471, when the Malaspina came to the power.
On a small plaza we find the church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio, containing an altar decorated on three sides by bas-reliefs of Bernini school.
The castle is situated at the top of the hill. It is formed by parts of different epochs. The most ancient part, dating back to the period before the Malaspina, is constituted by the great square tower.
