THE CHURCH OF SAN MICHELE ARCANGELO IN PEGAZZANO
View of La Spezia from Biassa
The built up area of Pegazzano is completely immerged in the centre of Spezia. The church, today closed to the public, was thought to be a mere subsidiary of the church of Luni, built between 1470 and 1471. However, an epigraph inscribed into the bell tower suggests that the church dates back to 1349, and certain Romanesque features, such as the ashlars set into the side walls, the openings and single lancet windows and the walled stoup positioned below the epigraph, suggest that the building may date back even further than this.
The church also has certain gothic features, such as the slitted windows in the bell tower.
