THE CASTLE OF VIRGOLETTA
The village of Virgoletta
The origin of the castle of Virgoletta dates back to the XII century, when a squared base tower and walls were builded on the Vignale hill. The hamlet took the name of this fortification, from transliteration of the name "Verrucoletta" to Virgoletta.
The castle suffered many modifications during centuries. In 1449 Galeotto Campofregoso transformed it into an elegant palace. The work was brought to an end by the Malaspina in the XVI century. During the second world war, the castle became the center of a German commando.
