CHURCHES OF LUNIGIANA

The Romanesque church of Sorano
Everywhere in Lunigiana, the Catholic faith is present in many churches, mainly Romanesque and Baroques. Build upon preexistent construction, probably from the Longobards, the "pievi" are the symbol of Lunigiana religiosity and popular spirituality. Nowadays, they still remain mysterious, just as the real nature of Lunigiana.
The architecture of the Pieve di Sorano shows how the Via Francigena was a fusion point between the Longobard Romanesque and the Tuscan Romanesque architecture. Very importat are the capitels inside the churches, which are decorated with monsters and angels, sirens and cut heads, like in the Pieve di Codiponte, near Casola, while the flower symbols is present on the capitels of the pieve of San Paolo di Vendaso. in Vencaso. Particularly interesting as well the pievi of Viano, Offiano and Pognana, located among cypresses from where the view of the valley is wonderful.
