Irola is located among the streams Monia and Bagnone, on the left side of the river Magra. The suburb is separated in two parts, Irola di Sopra and Irola di Sotto, right below the Mount Biglio. At Irola di Sotto we can see a tower house with quadrangular plant, probably of the year 1000.
The parish church is dedicated to Saint Gimignano.
