Aiola was center of a castle, to the northern base of the "Pizzo d’Uccello". It was part of the fief of the marquises Malaspina in the XV century and then of the Florentine Republic with Fivizzano. In 1686 the Medici family tried to open a copper mine.
Nearby, in the XVII century, it was built a hermitage devoted to St. George, and inhabited till the end of the XVIII century.
