LUSUOLO
Lusuolo is a characteristic suburb half way between Villafranca and Mulazzo. It extends along the ridge of a dominant hill on the river Magra. The suburb and the castle represent an admirable example of fusion of military and civil architecture. The suburb stretches itself on one road only, closed by two doors. Lusuolo is protected on boht sides, from the precipice of the hill and from the imposing walls.
The medieval castle rose in defense of the Francigena Way, where this crossed the Magra in the site of the Chiesaccia, where there was an old medieval hospital and a church. For its strategic position, it was center of great clashes that provoked many destruction and reconstruction. The more ruinous siege was in 1449, with the Genoese of Campofregoso.
The building is structured around a central courtyard with well, on which lean out elaborate environments in different epochs. Today is home of the Museo dell’emigrazione della Gente di Toscana (Tuscany Emigration Museums).
