MONTEREGGIO
Montereggio rises on a hill in the high valley of the stream Mangiola, along an ancient medieval road that connected the Vara Valley to the Magra one. In the Middle Age, it was posession of the Malaspina of Mulazzo and then passed to the Gran Duke of Tuscany.
The suburb extends along the main street in a linear way, with a door that distinguishes the southern part of the suburb. The square is rounded by the Malaspina palace, in which the primitive castle is recognized and the old fortified church of Sant’Apollinare, very suggestive. The monument to the bookseller reminds to the history of Montereggio, from where many emigrants left for Northern Italy, France and England. Between August and September, the "Festa del Libro" is hola here to remember them. Continuing in the suburb we find the new church, devoted to Sant’Apollinare as well.
