TERRAROSSA
Terrarossa, the ancient Byzantine "Rubra", is located along the 62 road of the Cisa, between Villafranca and Aulla, in the territory of Licciana Nardi. On the same road stands the castle, erected by Fabrizio Malaspina. It was built between XVI and XVII century for strategic and commercial reasons. It has a square structure girded by four quadrangular towers. In the suburb we can see the church of St. Giovanni of the XI century, with a precious font of marble inside and the palace of the Cocchi family.
Historically, Terrarossa was fief of the marquises Malaspina of Villafranca since 1367. In 1610, Fabrizio Malaspina became marquis of the fief, but in 1618 he sold it to Grand Duke Cosimo III. In 1628 Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany gave the fief to Manfredi Malaspina of the line of Filattiera, that owned it till 1786.
