CASTIGLION DEL TERZIERE

Castiglion del Terziere

Castiglion del Terziere is located on a knoll on the left of the Magra. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, it was called "dei Corbellari", by the name of the family that ruled it. It became "del Terziere" since the XIII century, as it was the third part of the feudal possessions left by Obizzino Malaspina to his heirs.
In 1451, Castiglion del Terziere passed to the Republic of Florence, becoming the centre of Medici’s expansionistic politics in high Lunigiana.
The village is dominated by the castle, which dates back to the VI-VII century. The ancient XVI century church was abandoned in 1783 because of its precarious conditions. The new church, devoted to St. Leonardo and concluded in 1787, was built thanks to Giovanni of Girolamo Corbellari and the priest Don Michael Pedroni.
